What We Are About
Introduction
This non-for-profit project seeks funding and or donations to develop a comprehensive series of Yoruba-language textbooks that translate, contextualize, and synthesize Western educational theory and practice for use in Nigerian and West African classrooms.
The Project Aims To
Promote accessible, high-quality education through Yoruba-language materials. – Bridge cultural and epistemic gaps by presenting Western concepts in Yorùbá culturally relevant contexts. – Strengthen teacher capacity and student learning outcomes through evidence-based instructional strategies. – Build sustainable, locally governed publishing and distribution mechanisms
Background and Rationale
Educational Access: A significant portion of students in Yorubaland and the broader Yoruba-speaking diaspora learns in their mother tongue only at early levels. Yoruba-language textbooks for upper primary and tertiary levels remain limited, particularly for Western education subjects (e.g., Psychology, Pharmacology, Social Studies, Literature, Law, Nursing, and pedagogy)
Knowledge Transfer Gap
Western educational theories (constructivism, critical pedagogy, inquiry-based learning, assessment practices, etc.) are often taught in English or with limited Yoruba translation, hindering full comprehension and application by Yoruba-speaking teachers and students.
Cultural Relevance
Translating and contextualizing content in Yoruba supports comprehension, relevance, and retention, aligning with Universal Design for Learning and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Contribution to schorlaship in Yoruba Language Application at the doctoral dessertation level.
Sustainability and Localization
A locally authored curriculum project strengthens educational sovereignty, promotes bilingual instructional resources, and supports long-term capacity-building within Nigerian universities, publishing houses, and teacher-training institutions.
